1. Bitmain scaled down its mining operations in its Rockdale, Texas facility

According to the local news media outlet Texas Public Radio, Bitmain has halted the mining operations in its Rockdale, Texas facility due to the sharp decline in cryptocurrency prices which has greatly reduced profitability and there are no words from the giant on when the operations will presume. There are estimated 7000-8000 mining units within the facility. Read more

2.     Arrington XRP Leads $1 Million Funding Round in Dapp Economy Startup

Dapp economy startup Totle has raised $1 million in a private funding round. The new funding will be largely be used to hire more developers, with about 40 percent also going into administration and marketing. Arrington XRP, the hedge fund launched by TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington, led the round along with NEO Global Capital and Goren Holm Ventures. Read more

3.     Spanish’s major energy company to use blockchain in renewable energy tracking

As per reports of Spanish independent news agency Europe press reports, Spanish’s major energy company Iberdrola has started using Blockchain to track renewable energy. The first trial was conducted in cooperation with Kutxabank. During the pilot, Iberdrola monitored the renewable energy delivered from two wind farms and one power station to banks’ offices located in Basque Country and the southern city of Cordoba.Read more

4. Bitcoin worth $70,000 donated to a Twitch gamer playing Runescape

A Twitch streamer called “Sick_Nerd” received a donation of 20 BTC during a live stream on January 11, 2019 while playing a Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. The donation was made by a user “lightpuma”. It came in denominations of 4 BTC and the total donations amounted to 20BTC worth a whopping €61,687.42 or $70,780.20. Read more

5.     Vermont State Agencies Launch Blockchain Pilot Program for Captive Insurance Industry

The Secretary of State Jim Condos and Department of Financial Regulation Commissioner Michael Pieciak have signed an agreement to join forces to explore Blockchain technology and the benefits of its deployment in maintaining records in the captive insurance field. Captive insurance is an alternative form of self-insurance where a parent group creates a licensed insurance company for itself. The type of alternative insurance helps large corporations to insure their own risks and reduce their insurance premiums. Read more

6. New Zealand Crypto Exchange Cryptopia Goes Offline Citing Hack

The exchange announced the news on Twitter this morning, stating that it “suffered a security breach which resulted in significant losses.” No information has yet been provided on the value of the losses, the tokens and currencies affected or any measures to refund users. Read More
