On March 30, 2021, Web3 Foundation took us by surprise, when it declared the launch of the first edition of “Polkadot Buildathon: India”. For those left dazed, let us give you an overture.
This hackathon strives to prepare the developer ecosystem in India with the right set of information and in turn, empower it to build a blockchain for the Polkadot ecosystem.
This will later instigate mass adoption of this next phase Web3 wave in the country.
The Hackathon, expected to last 8 weeks, will commence with four-week-long ideation support, followed by a four-week-long integration period. There will be a plethora of webinars, workshops, etc. along with persistent assistance on tech guidance in projects, networking opportunities, PR support, and much more.
The Ideation Phase will nourish the partakers with training workshops, enable them to comprehend basic local node deployment, and recognize viable real-world problem statements that the chain can solve.
At the end of the Integration Phase, the participants will be able to customize the blockchain solutions and put in advancement features.
The Hackathon is open to all – from blockchain enthusiasts and startups to students to anyone aware of the blockchain technology or has worked with Rust(programming language), prior.
The Buildathon is also on the lookout for developers who can carve tooling for pre-existing solutions like Block visualizers on Polkadot.
For fresh developers set to embark on the thriving decentralized blockchain technology, this is a good milestone.
With a prize pool of $14,000, the Hackathon poses an incentive of USD 200 grant to the top 20 teams.
Condition: They qualify for the first cohort and build their solution using Substrate.
(Substrate is a commonly used blockchain-building framework by Polkadot).
Lumos Labs – the Singapore based innovation management firm specializes in operating tech-centered open innovation programs in India.
Polkadot, founded by Dr. Gavin Wood, is the flagship program by the Web3 Foundation. This scalable chain is the first protocol to deliver a safe environment for cross-chain composability across numerous shards.
Polkadot also introduces a highly advanced, open governance system that will entitle the network to innovate and prosper at a comparatively timely stride than legacy networks.
From DeFi to energy to gaming anticipated to flourish on Polkadot, one can’t deny that Polkadot is getting on to indulging the centralized platforms of Web 2.0. in a cut-throat challenge.
Urban Osvald, Growth Manager at Web3 Foundation asserts, “As the world heads towards the next (Web3) wave of the internet, India stands at the forefront of this decentralization revolution with its vast developer pool, second only to the USA. We at Polkadot recognize the true potential and are excited to build a strong community that will further our mission to empower the innovators to develop better solutions and free the society from its reliance on a centralized web where its large institutions can violate trust. Our Polkadot Buildathon: India initiative is a step forward in this direction. We are very excited to kickstart one of our many engagements to come with developers in India. “
The registrations began for developers pan India on March 30 and are open till April 24, 2021.

Polkadot, Web3 Foundation‘s Flagship Project, ameliorates the traditional linear blockchain model, which has repeatedly faced congested pipelines and rising transaction fees.
It attains this by inducting a Relay Chain. The Relay Chain, other than letting other blockchains be designed on top of it, parallelly processes transactions from these chains and seamlessly communicates between the similar chains- enabling them to exchange assets across parachains.
